Inscriptions and Index

Copied August, 1971

Transcribed by Madeleine D. Eckert, December, 2010

NOTE:

This listing of those buried in the Mill Hill Burying Ground was recorded in 1971.  Therefore, only those headstones that were visible and readable were recorded.  Also, in the Colonial Period, less than a third of burials were marked with an inscribed headstone.  Often, a simple rock was used. Some errors may have occurred when the compiler initially copied the information, or from typographical errors created when transcribing the original printed or microfilmed documentation into the present format.  If the person you are looking for is not on this list, it does not mean that they are not buried at Mill Hill.  If you have information that someone is buried at Mill Hill but is not on our list, please let us know at info@norwalkhistoricalsociety.org

TRANSCRIBER’S INTRODUCTORY NOTES

NOTE 1: UNUSUALLY POOR QUALITY OF REFERENCE COPY

The reference copy of these Inscriptions is of extremely poor print quality with numerous broken and/or faded letters and numbers.  At times it has been almost impossible to decipher.

NOTE 2: USE OF ARCHAIC F’S FOR S’S

In most cases, text has been transcribed exactly as spelled in the original document.  Archaic f’s for s’s have been used, when utilized.

NOTE 3: TOMBSTONES THAT CONTAIN THE ARCHAIC WORD “YE”

WITH INITIAL CAP “Y” UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED: 17.

2. (lowercase), 4., 5., 8., 17., 27. (lowercase), 29., 30. (uppercase & lowercase), 32., 35., 36., 39., 50., 63., 65., 66., 127.

NOTE 4: NUMBER OF TOMBSTONES: 227.

The reference copy states 230 tombstones.  In reality, the reference copy lists 227 stones.  It is missing page 13, which must have included stone 53 (most likely, Rev. Matthias Burnet).  Also, stones 160., 161., and 167. are listed as “missing.”  There are two consecutively listed stones, numbered as 80. and 80.  I have named these two entries 80A. and 80B. to keep the numerical “place” of the original list.

NOTE 5: NUMBER OF PEOPLE WITH TOMBSTONES: 234.

There are 234 people with tombstones buried at Mill Hill, if you count the “missing” page containing stone 53. (most likely, Rev. Matthias Burnet).

NOTE 27: MISC. INFO RE: STONE CUTTERS ASA HILL AND SONS ITHUEL HILL AND PHINEAS HILL

From “Mirror and Metaphor: material and social constructions of reality.” (Ingersoll, Bronitsky, American Anthropological Association Meeting, 1987)

“Asa Hill (1719-1808) who with his sons Ithuel Hill (1769-1821) and Phineas Hill (1778-1844) were the principal stonecutters of Litchfield and New Haven counties in the second half of the eighteenth century (Caulfield n.d.: “Hill Family”).  Asa Hill initially made stones in the manner of Thomas Johnson.”

“Ithuel Hill was the only known Long Island stonecutter from the late 1700s to the early 1800s.  He moved from Connecticut to Sag Harbor and married Isabel Cornwall.  His stones can be identified by his distinctive ‘signatures,’ like that on this Jericho Cemetery stone for Jeremiah Jones.  Hill lived with his family in Sag Harbor and died in Tarpaulin Cove at age 54.  Isabel Hill died at age 71 and is buried in the Oakland Cemetery in a grave with a plain stone.”

Supposedly, Ithuel Hill is buried in the Old Burying Ground in Sag Harbor, Suffolk Co., NY.

Old Burying Ground by Lois Beachy Underhill

“Sag Harbor’s founding citizens, among them men who had served in the Revolutionary War, were buried in the Old Burying Ground The earliest graves were sometimes marked with carved field stones. When the Hill brothers moved from Connecticut to Sag Harbor in 1793, Long Island acquired its first stone carvers. Elegant gravestones of sandstone imported from Connecticut and New Jersey became more easily available. Angel faces and weeping willows decorated the tops of the stones. About 1800, marble began replacing sandstone.”

From “The East Hampton Star” 02 Apr 1998:
In 1793, Sag Harbor got its own stonecarvers when Ithuel and Phineas Hill moved here from Connecticut. Business was so good that, according to Dr. Stone, in 1832 Phineas Hill went to Huntington to look for an agent. Hill descendants are still carving stone in Riverhead today.

“The close ties between Long Island and New England lasted into the eighteenth century. It should come as no surprise then that Long Islanders imported their tombstones from New England. This continued until the early years of the nineteenth century (Welch 1983, p.4). According to the Association for Gravestone Studies: “Long Island had no residing carvers until stone artisan Ithuel Hill set up shop in Sag Harbor in 1789. Additionally an overwhelming amount of the regions grave markers (85%) are of New England origin; the remaining were fashioned by either New York City, Lower Hudson, or New Jersey area carvers…” (Association for Gravestone Studies 1986, p.1).

02 Jul 1800 Danbury, CT ‘Farmer’s Journal,’ PHINEAS HILL “has on hand a large assortment of GRAVE STONES which will be lettered for any person on the shortest notice.”

RE: Phineas Hill and second wife Sarah:

HUNTINGTON-BABYLON TOWN HISTORY

Huntington Historical Society, 1937. Page 52: METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH

Methodism was first spread on Long Island by itinerant preachers known as circuit riders, who rode through the country and formed classes wherever a group of people could be assembled.  Freeborn Garretson was one of the first of these, traversing the island for eleven years.  The first class in which people of Huntington joined was held in 1803.  Summer camp meetings developed from these classes, the earliest being held on the west side of Little Cow Harbor, now Centerport.  Following that of 1816, a society was formed in Huntington.  About 1820, a shop which stood on what is now the Sutton property, just where the East Street reaches the harbor, was fitted with a pulpit and backless benches, and this room was used for services until a church was built.

Among the early Methodists were Mr. and Mrs. Phineas Hill.  He was a stonecutter, with workshop in his dooryard at the Town Spot.  Mrs. Hill started a Sunday School in her husband’s shop which she used until the meeting-room at the harbor was fitted up, when she continued the school there.  Mr. and Mrs. Hill were the parents of the Reverend Francis C. Hill, 1823-1898, a well-known Methodist clergyman.  The society began soliciting subscriptions for a church building in 1828, and during 1828-1829 it was erected on the Main Street lot, and the “first penny collection taken up” May 17, 1829.  etc. etc.

FYI: Dr. Asa HILL (born 1815 Norwalk, died 1874 Norwalk, buried East Norwalk Cemetery), dentist, inventor, Christian scholar, representative to CT State Assembly, writer, and speaker.  Son of headstone carver Phineas HILL and his first wife Mary STONE.

(Short excerpt of lengthy article)

THE PENNSYLVANIA JOURNAL OF DENTAL SCIENCE. Vol. 1. OCT, 1874. No. 10.
ASA HILL, D.D.S., NORWALK, CONN. Prepared by Rev. S. B. S. Bissell.

ASA HILL, D.D.S., was born Nov. 20th, 1815, in Norwalk, Conn., the youngest of six children. His mother died when he was about three years of age. His father subsequently married a widow with seven children, making in all a family of thirteen children. He soon afterward removed to Huntingdon, Long Island. Here the subject of this sketch remained at home until about the age of fourteen years, when, feeling that his father had his hands full to support his numerous family, (having five children as the issue of his second marriage,) he went to live with his eldest brother, then residing in Danbury, Conn. The following winter, being then fifteen years of age, he attended District School, and graduated, so far as attending school is concerned, in an old red school-house at the foot of Main street. Henceforth his employment was to assist his brother in various ways, and thus make compensation for his support. Prior to his advent in Danbury, while still living at home, a wild and thoughtless youth, he became a subject of deep and earnest religious sensibility, resulting in a thorough change of life and character, of course and destiny.

And nature weeps her comforts fled
And withered all her joys.

Hope looks beyond the bounds of time

When what we now deplore

True daughter of affliction, she,
Inured to pain and misery,
Mourn’d a long night of griefs and fears,
A legal night of seventy years.
The Father then revealed his Son;
Him in the broken bread made known;
She knew and felt her sins forgiven,
And found the earnest of her heaven.
Meet for the fellowship above,
She heard the call, “Arise, my love!”
“I come!” her dying looks replied,
And, lamb-like as her Lord, she died.)

To seek a slumber in the dust.

Nor pain, nor grief, nor anxious fear,
Invade thy bounds; no mortal woes

Can reach the peaceful sleeper here,
And angels watch the soft repose.

So Jesus slept; God’s dying Son

Passed through the grave, and blessed the bed;

Rest here, dear saint, till from his throne

The morning break and pierce the shade.

Break from his throne, illustrious Morn;

I would not live always—Job 7:16.

I would not live always, I ask not to stay,
Where storm after storm rises dark o’er the way;
The few lurid mornings that dawn on us here,
Are enough for life’s woes, full enough for its cheer.
I would not live always—no, welcome the tomb,
Since Jesus hath lain there, I dread not its gloom;
There sweet be my rest till he bids me arise,
To hail him in triumph, descending the skies.
I would not live always away from my God,
Away from yon Heaven, the blissful abode;
Where the rivers of pleasure flow o’er the bright plain,
And the noontide of glory eternally reigns.
Where the saints of all ages in harmony meet,
Their Saviour and brethren transported to greet,
While the anthems of rapture unceasingly roll,
And the smile of the Lord is the feast of the soul.)

My weeping friend remember me

And you my children dear

And live [sic] to God that when you die

You may with him appear

Oh take these tears Mortality’s relief

& Till we share your Joys forgive your grief

These little rites a stone averse receiv’d

Tis all a Father, all a friend can give.

(TRANSCRIBER’S NOTE:

Note the following epitaph from Old Bridgewater Burying Place, Litchfield Co., CT:

BETTY / wife of / Benjamin A Ruggles / died / March, 10, 1853 / AE 90.
My weeping friends remember me
And you my children dear
Live near to God that when you die
You may with Christ appear.

Also note the following epitaph:

On the Monument of the Hon. Robert Digby, and of his Sister Mary, erected by their Father the Lord Digby, in the Church of Sherborne in Dorsetshire, 1727:

Go! fair example of untainted youth,
Of modest wisdom, and pacifick truth:
Compos’d in sufferings, and in joy sedate,
Good without noise, without pretension great.
Just of thy word, in every thought sincere,
Who knew no wish but what the world might hear:
Of softest manners, unaffected mind,
Lover of peace, and friend of human kind:
Go, live! for Heaven’s eternal year is thine,
Go, and exalt thy mortal to divine.

And thou, blest maid ! attendant on his doom,
Pensive hast follow’d to the silent tomb,
Steer the same course to the same quiet shore,
Not parted long, and now to part no more!
Go, then, where only bliss sincere is known!
Go, where to love and to enjoy are one!

Yet take these tears, Mortality’s relief,
And till we share your joys, forgive our grief:
These little rites, a stone, a verse receive,
‘Tis all a father, all a friend can give!)
