SUMMARY:Vampires in Connecticut
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Lecture with Dr. Nicholas BellantoniSunday\, October 26 from 2:00-3:00pm \n\n\n\nJoin Dr. Nicholas Bellantoni as he reveals how vampire folklore and archaeology collided in New England. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn the 19th century\, fear of vampires swept across New England. Join the Norwalk Historical Society as we explore this fascinating folklore and uncover a real-life mystery that began in 1990\, when two boys stumbled upon human skulls in a Connecticut gravel quarry. \n\n\n\nArchaeologists—including our speaker\, Dr. Nicholas Bellantoni—investigated what turned out to be a forgotten colonial cemetery. One unusual grave raised suspicions of vampire beliefs\, but the truth revealed a much deeper story rooted in public health concerns. \n\n\n\nThrough archaeology\, forensics\, genealogy\, and folklore\, learn how experts piece together the truth behind the “Connecticut vampires.” \n\n\n\nScan the QR code or click here to reserve a spot. The virtual event Zoom link will be emailed to you after you register for the event. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Dr. Nicholas F. BellantoniDr. Nicholas F. SUMMARY:Thou Shalt Not Suffer a Witch to Live: Witch Trials in Early New England
DESCRIPTION:Thou Shalt Not Suffer a Witch to Live:Witch Trials in Early New England \nWednesday\, October 30th\, 6:30-8:00pmMill Hill Historic Park\, 2 East Wall Street\, Norwalk \n \nLeslie Lindenauer \nJoin the Norwalk Historical Society and Leslie Lindenauer\, Professor and author\, as we dive into the dark history of witch trials in early New England – it’s gonna be a spooky ride! \nIn 1692-3 in Salem\, Massachusetts the courts sentenced 19 people to hang and tortured a 20th to death. At least five more people died in jail. When most people think about the historic American witch trials\, it is the events in Salem that dominate. \nFewer of us are aware that dozens and perhaps hundreds of people were tried for witchcraft in New England beginning over four decades before the events in Salem. Many of those trials occurred in Connecticut. At least sixteen people in Connecticut and Massachusetts were executed for the crime\, most of them women. This program will explore those trials and consider how popular representations of witches – and Salem! – have changed over time. \nScan with your phone to buy tickets \nLight Refreshments. \nPurchase Tickets : Online: $15\, At the Door: $25 \nNet proceeds benefit the Norwalk Historical Society’s education programs and exhibitions. She holds an A.B. from Brown University\, and an MA and PhD from New York University. She is currently working on an article examining the mythologies inherent in popular representations of early American witch trials. Her book I Could Not Call Her Mother: The Stepmother in American Popular Culture\, 1750-1960 was published by Lexington Books.

SUMMARY:Dusty Booze: In Search of Vintage Spirits

Mr. Goldfarb’s book\, published by Abrams Books\, will be available for purchase at the event through Diane’s Books\, Greenwich\, CT. \n \n \n \n CLICK TO BUY TICKETS\n \n $35 Members\,* $45 Non-Members \n*Tickets for Members of LMMM and the Norwalk Historical Society are $35\, $45 for non-members\, and are available on our Eventbrite page. \n \nThis well-illustrated lecture provides an entertaining journey into the booming world of vintage spirits\, the quirky and intensely passionate “dusty hunters” who chase them\, and the history they reveal\, from an acclaimed author and journalist. In Dusty Booze: In Search of Vintage Spirits\, journalist Aaron Goldfarb goes on an adventure in vintage spirits. This is an intoxicating story of obsessives on the hunt for old bottles of whiskey\, tequila\, rum\, chartreuse— you name it—from estate sales\, grandpa’s liquor cabinet\, and out-of-the-way and inner-city liquor stores that may just have a case or a few bottles lying around in the basement. Dusty Booze mixes the history of our drinking culture and the Indiana Jones-meets-Simpsons Comic Book Guy adventures of the collectors\, including the hunt for rumored stash from a reclusive Hollywood legend. This is a buoyant\, thirst-triggering voyage into a unique subculture that has exploded in popularity in recent years. \n\nAaron Goldfarb has written 12 books\, including “Gather Around Cocktails: Drinks to Celebrate Usual and Unusual Holiday Drinks” and “Hacking Whiskey: Smoking\, Blending\, Fat-Washing\, and Other Whiskey Experiments.” In 2020\, he was honored as Cocktail & Spirits Writer of the Year at Tales of the Cocktail’s Spirited Awards. In 2022\, he co-wrote “Brand Mysticism: Cultivate Creativity and Intoxicate Your Audience” with booze branding maven Steven Grasse of Hendrick’s Gin fame. Goldfarb writes features for the New York Times\, Wall Street Journal\, Esquire\, and VinePair\, where he serves as their writer-at-large. He lives in Brooklyn with family. SUMMARY:Lafayette’s Triumphal Tour: Celebrating the Legacy of French-American Friendship in Norwalk
DESCRIPTION:Lafayette’s Triumphal Tour: \nCelebrating the Legacy of French-AmericanFriendship in Norwalk \nSunday\, September 15th at 2:00pm \n \n Scan QR code with your phone for tickets\n \n Speaker: Dr. Iris de Rode\, PhD \nThis event is a virtual lecture. Free tickets are available here. \n \n \n Dr. Iris De Rode\, PhDDr. Iris de Rode\, PhD This virtual lecture will transport us back to August 20\, 1824 in Norwalk\, Connecticut when crowds gathered to catch a glimpse of the famous Marquis de Lafayette\, who visited Norwalk during his triumphal tour. His Farewell Tour to America celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Independence of the United States and Lafayette’s central role in the American Revolution. About Dr. Iris De Rode\, PhD Today\, as we celebrate the 200th anniversary of this visit and anticipate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, Dr. Iris de Rode will present her research on Lafayette and the other Frenchmen who helped secure American independence. Dr. de Rode will share insights from her discovery of the papers of Lafayette’s uncle\, the Marquis de Chastellux. As Major General of the French forces during the American Revolutionary War\, he worked closely with Lafayette. She will explore their cooperation and how both men spread American ideals upon their return to France. Focusing on this dynamic duo will illuminate Lafayette’s role\, the enduring legacy of the Revolution\, and place Lafayette’s visit to Norwalk in a broader historical context.
