Caught in the Crosshairs
THE STORY OF THE NORDEN BOMBSIGHT:
THE SECRET WEAPON OF WORLD WAR II
CURATED BY JUDITH BACAL
The Norden Bombsight was an American technological breakthrough that enabled the military to target bombs with unprecedented precision and accuracy. During World War II (1939-1945), the bombsight was shrouded in secrecy.
Carl L. Norden developed the Norden Bombsight and in 1928, with his business partner Theodore Barth, Carl L.Norden, Inc. was founded. The first prototype was created in 1931 and was first used in combat in 1942. After the war, when the shroud of secrecy was removed, the bombsight became legendary.
In 1961 the Norden Company moved to Norwalk where the company developed air-to-ground and sea radars, space systems and sensors for military and commercial use.
For 54 years Norwalk was its home, from 1961– 2013.
