Norwalk in the 19th century was a rapidly growing industrial town. One of those industries was the pottery trade. The significant hallmark of that trade is “Norwalk feb’y the 13 1854.” It is the signature piece that symbolizes our flourishing town and harbor.
“feb’y” was made at the Smith Pottery which once stood at the base of Mill Hill, just a few yards from the 1835 Norwalk Town House.
The potters of Norwalk made a wide range of ceramic ware. Vessels for preparing, serving and storing food; jugs used by sailors to hold potable water; doorknobs; buttons. Elegant pieces. Everyday items.
