Ships plied the Long Island sound and oystering was big business. This quilt might be one of the first multi-cultural artifacts in Norwalk. The patterns of Hawaiian textile design were known to sailors and missionaries who brought them back to the United States, reinterpreting and transmitting their designs through quilt making. The popularity of red and white color schemes at that time was a result of new techniques in colorfast fabric dyes that finally made red more stable. The Oak leaf variation could be a reference to the state symbol of Connecticut, the Charter Oak.

Westmoreland • “The squares were pieced together by my mother's mother, Nora McKee in 1959 as a baby blanket for my impending arrival. But unfortunately, she died suddenly of a stroke in April, 1959. I was born just two months later in June. Upon learning of the squares’ existence, my father's mother, Drue Westmoreland, pieced the squares together and quilted them, finishing the quilt in the mid-1960s.”

My Dad was her “favorite” and she entrusted four quilts to him and my Mother to pass down through the generations of Leggitts. The oldest quilt has Amish origins, as Sarah Ella Clites Honn, my great grandmother, was from an Amish family that dates back to the early 1700s in Pennsylvania. The other two quilts were made by her daughter in the early 1900s. These are all cherished quilts and will be passed down through the generations of our family.”

The quilt was a favorite of all of us growing up, used for many naps, playing games on and watching TV. I wanted the quilt for my newly renovated house when I moved to New York, but my mother refused to give it to me, saying it was for my brother. Fortunately, my sister Carol, a very talented seamstress and quilter, stepped in and made a copy with colors that matched my house.“

She made the beautiful drapes that still hang today in the Bayou Bend Mansion of the famous Texas Hogg family, which is now part of the Houston Museum of Fine Arts and a National Landmark. She originally used this material to make drapes for mine and my brother's bedroom when we moved to the suburbs in 1964. By the early 70s, the drapes were no longer "cool" for two teenage boys and were taken down. My grandmother took the drapes back and a month later surprised me (and my sister with her "Alice in Wonderland" themed curtain quilt) with the remade curtains into quilts.”

Macaluso: “When I look at the pieces of fabric used in this Giant Bowties quilt, they remind me of my great-grandparents Carmella and Albert Paul and grandmother Nancy Paul. Albert (Alberto Paola) came to New York from Calabria, Italy, in 1909. Eventually he made his way to Norwalk, married Carmella (“Millie”) Patchen, and settled in the house that still stands at 17 Chapel Street, which was an Italian-American community close to St. Mary's Church. Nancy made the Giant Bowties quilt from a kit around 1950 for her son, my father, Paul J. Macaluso, Sr. Albert died when I was about ten, and I remember the texture of his Italian skin, and his voice, and his smell. The quilt has pieces of patterned cloth that remind me of Albert's shirts (such as the red and blue plaid) and Millie's aprons. The back of the quilt is a patterned cloth printed with quilt blocks which everyone loves, because it was a charming attempt for a non-quilter to make her work look more quilted! Though the quilt was made for a boy, it speaks to a larger family history, of which my father was one important part. I donated this quilt to the Norwalk Historical Society because it tells a particular Norwalk story, which will be documented and cared for and hopefully shared with future generations. My family is now officially a part of Norwalk history!”

Fire Near Carriage House/Barn, 2010 | Karen Macdonald | Quilted wall hanging with appliqué | Hand quilted and hand pieced, 27” x 27” | Loaned by Karen Macdonald — Fire Near Carriage House/Barn, 2010 | Karen Macdonald | Quilted wall hanging with appliqué | Hand quilted and hand pieced, 27” x 27” | Loaned by Karen Macdonald • This unique Norwalk story was told to Karen Macdonald’s mother Jeannette Crane Macdonald by her uncle Charles Crane (elder brother to Harold Alvin Crane) regarding his grandfather Daniel C. Green, who died in Norwalk in 1911: • “Grandfather Green had a farm in West Norwalk on a hill, 3.5 miles from the Sound. It was 90 acres, and they raised corn, rye and vegetables. He had workers collecting sumac, threshed it and shipped it to New York City for tanning leather. It was discovered that vinegar did just as well, so he collected vinegar from all the farms, and had vats in the cellar. Teams of horses could come in cellar doors and make a circuit of the cellar. Then acetic acid was used to replace vinegar. End of that work. The house had 16 rooms situated at the top of the hill. Grandma Green was deathly afraid of lightning, so the house was built with a large room in the middle of the house with no windows, all the other rooms around it. The family would go camping at Wilson’s Point every summer, and this calm rake was used often. • Grandfather Green was rather a jokester. He had farmhands clear lots of brush from the edge of pastures and put in in a big pile and let it dry all summer. Lit it on a clear windless night and the whole town came to put out the fire, which they thought was the house on fire. People arrived on horseback and on foot. When they arrived, they saw that the carriage shed was all prepared with a harvest feast, party and dance. The ladies had prepared ahead with cider and wine, and everyone had a ball Charlie’s job as a boy was to whittle tallow candles to make the floors slippery for dancing, and he could slide on it like ice. • Karen Macdonald is a fourth generation Connecticut quilter and a member of the Connecticut Piecemakers Guild and the Southport Congregational Church quilting group.

The names of several local establishments are incorporated and readable in these historic emblems of the heyday of Norwalk’s manufacturing past.

You can surely see almost all the forms represented in this quilt if you look for them. This quilt was made by a librarian at the Rowayton Library. The Penberthy family has long been involved in the support of the Rowayton Library, an important community resource.

Leggitt, Member Mulberry Quilters, Manchester, CT | Red, white and blue cotton, 102” x 84¾” | Loaned by Susan Leggitt • “My Mom took up quilting in her later years, after my Dad retired and she became a "fishing widow". She was a member of the Mulberry Quilters in Manchester, CT and truly found her voice in her work. This sampler quilt was one that was inspired by her love of different patterns, and one of the squares is a replica of a pattern from an antique family quilt. Our family was so proud of her when she entered this quilt in the Eastern States Exposition quilt category and won First Place. I remember going up to the Big E with her and my Dad and seeing it hanging in the show, and taking numerous pictures of her standing by it. When it came time for her to move out of her home and into assisted living, she gave me this quilt, knowing how much I loved it and knowing I would cherish and take special care of it. I intend to hand it down to my oldest niece when the time comes in order to continue her legacy.”

It was made and given as a wedding present to my brother, Steven Bauer, and his wife, Susan Morton Bauer, on June 26, 1994. This quilt illustrates another reason quilts were made. In the 1850s, the great grandmother of Esther Bond Raymond left her home in Albany, New York and moved to Norwalk. Her friends made her a signature quilt with their names written in fond remembrance of their departing friend. Although these kind of quilts were more frequently made for departing clergy, this quilt taken to her new home in Connecticut must have evoked many a fond memory as she looked upon the fabric, sewing and signatures of her loved ones. This quilt has descended on the matrilineal line of the Bond-Raymond family.

The quilt was inherited by her daughter, Louise Lowe Carter (July 2, 1896-January 30, 1991), of Opelika. “Aunt Easie” was much beloved by generations of children (including me) who attended her kindergarten over a 35-year period. Upon “Aunt Easie’s” death, the quilt came to my mother, Marcia Leonora Stowe (Mrs. Clyde L. Powell) from whom I inherited it when she died in 1999. • Originally, the quilt probably belonged to Great Aunt Uptie's grandmother, Sophia Nisba Barnes (Mrs. John W. Pitts), of Newborn, GA. It probably was inherited by her mother, Indiana Pitts (Mrs. John Ashley Stowe), (September 16, 1837-March 16, 1914). The signatures are dated 1845, 1846 and 1847, and some of the quilt blocks include the names of towns – Charleston (SC) and Savannah (GA)."

Piecing a quilt top or quilting the backing together? If you were a women in the 19th century and had a quilt frame and lots of friends and relatives living near by, quilting bees were lots of fun. Getting together for a good gossip or to work out problems while quilting was a social occasion frequently topped off by a party with the men folk. The invention of the Singer Sewing Machine in 1857 greatly reduced the time women had to spend in the production of garments and other textiles. Women were free to spend more time on the design of quilts and less on their manufacture. Several unfinished quilt tops in this exhibit illustrate this new development.

Nevertheless, we are fortunate to retain and preserve their efforts and can project images of artistry and industry of the women in days gone by.

Both women took up quilting at about the same time in the 1970’s. On the occasion of the birth of her first grandchild William Korzennik, Mrs. Siegel stitched this quilt. It has several meanings. The sailboat reference is for Rowayton and also an allusion to a German sea Capitan who is an ancestor.

The top sat in a closet until the second Gulf War, at which time a friend and I machine quilted it using her Singer sewing machine. This quilt was exhibited at Clark County Fair in Vancouver, WA, August 2004 and won a blue ribbon.”

Entirely hand sewn, it is an exuberant expression of her talent and devotion to her granddaughter. This quilt was displayed on a twin bed in a girls room from 1973 until 2006.
